Aglet

A tag or sheath, as of plastic, on the end of a lace, cord, or ribbon to facilitate its passing through eyelet holes.

Arch

A device inserted in or built into shoes for supporting the arch of the foot.

Ballerina

A woman's very low-heeled or heelless shoe or slipper, made to resemble a ballet slipper.

Boot

Footwear that covers the whole foot and lower leg to the height of the ankle bone and higher.

Buckle

A clasp consisting of a rectangular or curved rim, fixed to one end of a strap, used for fastening to the other end of the same strap or to another strap. (slide buckle, snap buckle)

Burnished

A smooth glossy finish or appearance; luster.

Calfskin

Leather made from the skin or hide of a calf.

Cambrelle®

Is a non-woven synthetic fabric used primarily as a lining for shoes, boots and slippers.

Canvas

A heavy, coarse, closely woven fabric.

Clog

An open back shoe with a thick sole of wood, cork, rubber, or the like.

Collar

A narrow strip of leather or other material stitched around the top of a shoe as reinforcement or trimming.

Elastic

A flexible stretchable fabric made with interwoven strands of rubber or an imitative synthetic fiber.

Embellish

To make beautiful, as by ornamentation; decorate.

Emboss

A fancy or geometric pattern is impressed into the leather.

Embroider

To ornament with needlework.

Espadrille

A shoe, often with a wedge heel, with a cloth upper and sometimes lacing that ties around the ankle.

Finish

A surface application on the leather to color, protect, or mask imperfections. More specifically, all processes administered to leather after it has been tanned.

Flat

A shoe with a flat heel or no heel.

Foot Bed

The inner portion of any footwear where the bottom of one's foot rests.

Forefoot

The front part of the human foot.

Full Grain

The outside original skin or hide which has had the hair removed, but otherwise has not been corrected or altered. Full-grain leather possesses the genuine original grain of the animal.

Ghillie

A tongue-less shoe with loops instead of eyelets for the laces, which cross the instep.

Goatskin

Skin from a mature goat.

Gore

An elastic panel stitched into either or both sides or top of the vamp in a shoe in order to make it more comfortable and easier to put on and take off.

Heel Cup

The part of a shoe covering the back part of the wearer's heel.

Heel Height

Measuring from the vertical line at the center of the heel, the heel height is the measurement from the point where heel is connected to vamp to heel cap. Measured in increments of 1/8th inches. (ie 8/8 equals 1 inch)

Hidden Gore

A covered elastic panel that gives greater width or a desired shape to a shoe.

Hide

The pelt or skin of one of the larger animals (cow, horse, buffalo, etc.), raw or dressed.

Huarache

A casual flat shoe (either sandal or closed toe) with an upper of woven leather strips.

Inseam

The hidden seam of a shoe that holds together the welt, upper, lining and insole.

Insole

The inner portion of footwear that the bottom of one's foot rests on.(see footbed)

Instep

The part of the shoe that covers the arched upper surface of the foot between the toes and the ankle.

Kidskin

Skin from young goat.

Kiltie

A shoe with a fringed tongue that flaps over the vamp and conceals all or part of the lacing.

Laces

A cord or ribbon used to draw and tie together the two opposite edges of a shoe.

Lambskin

Skin from a lamb or young sheep.

Leather

The skin of an animal, typically with the hair removed, prepared for use by tanning or a similar process designed to preserve it against decay and make it pliable or supple when dry.

Lining

A layer of material on the inner side or surface of a shoe.

Loafer

A low leather step-in shoe with an upper resembling a moccasin but with a broad, flat heel.

Magic Cling

A brand of fastening tape consisting of opposing pieces of fabric, one with a dense arrangement of tiny nylon hooks and the other with a dense nylon pile, that interlock when pressed together, used as a closure in place of laces or buckles.

Manmade

Produced artificially; not resulting from natural processes.

Mary Jane

A low-heeled shoe having across the instep a single strap that fastens at the side.

Microsuede

Microsuede is a microfiber knit blend fabric that has a soft finish.

Midsole

A layer of material or cushioning between the outsole and the insole of a shoe used for reinforcement or cushioning.

Mocassin

A heelless shoe made entirely of soft leather, as deerskin, with the sole brought up and attached to a piece of u-shaped leather on top of the foot.

Mule

A lounging slipper that covers the toes and instep or only the instep.

Napa Leather

Napa is a term that is used to describe supple leatherized sheepskins.

Nubuck

A brushed, silky-sueded very soft leather.

Orthotic

A support or brace designed for weak or ineffective joints or muscles.

Outsole

The bottom of the shoe.

Oxford

A sturdy, low shoe that laces over the instep.

Patent Leather

Leather with a glossy impermeable finish produced by successive coats of drying oils, varnish, or synthetic resins.

Pebbled Grain

Embossed leather grain finish that resembles a pebbled surface.

Perforated

Pierced with a hole or holes.

Pigskin Leather

Skin from pigs and hogs.

Piping

A tubular band of ornamental material, sometimes containing a cord, usually used for trimming the edges and seams.

Pleat

A fold in cloth made by doubling the material upon itself and then pressing or stitching it into place.

Quarter

The back portion of a shoe that covers the heel and sides, often joined at the back seam.

Rand

A strip of cloth, leather, metal or contrasting material used to support the shoe at the heel.

Sandal

A shoe consisting of a sole of leather or other material fastened to the foot by various vamp styles.

Slouch/Scrunch Boot

Boot with a crunched, crushed, or crumpled exterior material accent.

Sequin

A small shining disk or spangle used for ornamentation.

Sheepskin

Skin from a mature sheep.

Slide

A flat or very low-heeled, backless shoe or slipper that can be slipped on and off the foot easily.

Sling-Back

A woman's shoe with an open back and a strap or sling encircling the heel of the foot to keep the shoe secure.

Slip-On

A shoe that is easily slipped on or off.

Slipper

A low shoe that can be slipped on and off easily and usually worn indoors.

Sneaker

A high or low shoe, usually of fabric such as canvas, with a rubber or synthetic sole.

Sock-Liner

A thin piece of material that is laid on top of the insole of a shoe, boot, or other footwear.

Sole

The under part of a shoe, boot, or the like, or this part exclusive of the heel.

Soutache

A narrow flat braide, used for trimming and embroidery.

Split Leather

Skin sliced in layers to give uniform thickness to the piece. Split leather is trimmed and finished as suede.

Suede

Leathers that are finished by buffing the flesh side which is opposite the grain side to produce a nap.

Tassel

A bunch of loose threads or cords bound at one end and hanging free at the other.

Throat

The opening of the shoe that extends from the vamp to the ankle.

Tip

An additional piece of leather in several different shapes or patterns that covers the toe of a shoe.

Tongue

A strip of leather or other material under the lacing or fastening of a shoe.

Tread

The part of the under surface of a shoe that touches the ground.

Tricot Lining

A plain knitted cloth of any of various yarns.

Unit Bottom

A shoe bottom made from a single mold of rubber or plastic. It includes the sole, platform heel or wedge.

Upper

Any portion of the shoe above the sole and midsole.

Vamp

The portion of a shoe or boot upper that covers the instep and toes.

Vegetarian Shoes

Shoes made of non-leather synthetic materials.

A unit of measurement in letters (N=AA, M=B, W=C/D, WW=E/EE, WWWW=EEE/ EEEE) that refers to the width of the shoe last as measured at the ball of the foot. Widths are defined in one-sixths of an inch.
